87,
600 Filipinos die each year due to smoking. Cigarette has also cost P148
billion a year in economy’s losses due to illness and death. Smoking is
dangerous for your health because it can cause a lot of diseases like ear
infection, respiratory, and asthma.
Smoking
can cause ear infection. As we all know, smoke is an irritant to our nasal
passage. Since our body is equipped with defense mechanisms, our nasal passage
will thicken with mucus in the presence of irritants. As mentioned above,
thickened mucus becomes a favorable home to bacteria that could travel and
infect our ears. This is triggered by the protective action of our body against
cigarette smoke.
Emphysema
or commonly called as respiratory breakdown. This effect is a long term effect;
it is a progressive disease of lungs that primarily causes shortness of breath.
Cigarette
smoke contains several irritants that have been shown to cause chronic
inflammation in the airways. Such inflammation can lead to asthma.
Therefore,
for all the smokers out there, it is important that if you cannot stop smoking,
at least try to avoid smoking around people because it will have bad effects on
second hand smokers, and smoking can decrease your life by seven minutes each
stick of a cigarette, so if you will smoke a box of cigarette a day, your life
will be decreased by approximately 4 days, so you need to avoid or most
preferably stop smoking around people especially children.
